Women in Communication Scholarship

2011-2012 Academic Year Scholarships
Each year, the Seattle Professional Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications awards scholarships to Washington state college students majoring in a communications discipline. Applications are being accepted through May 1 for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Eligible students must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a Washington state resident
  • Be a registered student at a four-year college in Washington state for Fall 2011
  • Be a junior, senior or graduate student as of Fall 2011
  • Be accepted in, or applying to, a school at a four-year university or college to major in at least one of the following communications disciplines:

    • Advertising
    • Film
    • Graphic design
    • Journalism (print and broadcast)
    • Marketing
    • Multimedia design
    • Photography
    • Public relations
    • Technical communication
    • Television and radio production

Scholarship selections are based on:

  • Demonstrated excellence in communications
  • Positive contributions toward communications on campus, in the community
  • Scholastic achievement
  • Financial need
  • Work Samples
  • **Two work samples: If applicant is a student studying journalism, advertising, public relations, broadcasting or technical writing, please submit two (2) writing samples. If applicant is a student in the disciplines of graphic or multimedia design, please submit one (1) sample of your work in that discipline and one (1) writing sample.

Founded in 1983, GMMB has earned a reputation as the nation’s premier issues and advocacy communications firm.  We tackle the pressing issues of the day, including health care and health policy, safety, the environment, education, volunteer service, and many others. We use our commitment and expertise to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Our Seattle office is looking for a detail-oriented, hardworking, and energetic individual to assist various account teams for summer 2011. Duties include compiling and organizing press clips, research and writing backgrounder-type documents, some media relations, database management, logistics, and administrative support—all in a fun, fast-paced environment. This is a full-time, paid position.

GMMB’s address is 1200 Westlake Ave N, Suite 1005, Seattle, WA 98109. This is a great opportunity for juniors, seniors and recent grads to get a feel for how a PR firm works—all the while helping raise awareness about some great causes. In GMMB’s Seattle office, we work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, PATH, Public Health – Seattle and King County, and the WA State Department of Health. Strong writing and research skills are very important.

Position Summary:

Interested in broadening your awareness and offering your expertise surrounding writing, blogging, content strategy, and social media? Jolkona is offering a Blog Manager Intern (also called Blog Master internally) to assist in running our blog including content management and upkeep and being a member of Jolkona’s content team. The goal of this position is to implement the strategy for Jolkona’s blog and take our content to the next level.

Essential Functions:

· Create and maintain editorial calendar for the blog, including establishing goals for upcoming topics, reaching out to the Jolkona team to write posts, edit, and deliver in a timely manner.

· Editing posts for style, grammar, and spelling. Selecting photos to upload with post. Optimizing post for selected keywords.

· Manage the daily and weekly posting of articles and loading them into WordPress.

· Content creation – writing blog posts, articles, newsletters, communications materials, and material for social media channels.

· Work with the content team on writing donor and impact stories.

· Developing and revising content for submission to other sites and channels.

· Stay up to date on new social media tools, best practices and how other organizations and organizations are using them.

Ideal Experience & Qualifications:

· Loves to write & enjoys sharing ideas with others

· Excellent writing and communication skills

· Ability to write for varied audiences

· Prior blogging/Internet writing experience (on a personal or professional level)

· Organized with a strong attention to detail

· Project management interest and/or background

· Independent, creative self-starter

· Loves running with things while keeping everyone inside the organization in the loop

· Spends a lot of time online and stays up-do-date on new and fun things out there for web savvy users as well as regular people.

· Experience with WordPress

· Experience with keywords and meta tags is preferred

· Prefer experience in writing, journalism, or marketing communications

· Enjoys learning and is curious!

Time Commitment:

· 10-20 hours a week, usually split over 3 days in our office in downtown Seattle.

· Our office is laid back and fun, though it’s BYOC (bring your own computer).

· Must be able to attend bi-weekly team meetings that are held Wednesdays at 7pm

· Must be able to attend all company wide meetings (usually one every other month).

As a web content intern, you have a lot of flexibility in where you can do your work and how it can be done. You will be expected to fulfill the majority of your internship while working in our office located in downtown Seattle. (Let’s face it, it’s way easier to learn if you’re in the same room as us). Opportunity to occasionally work from home may be an option as the internship progresses.

Position Summary:

This internship will give the individual valuable and practical experience in social media marketing and PR outreach to influencers, advocates, bloggers, media, and current and perspective donors. The selected individual will play a crucial role in investing in our community of donors, followers, likers, advocates, and super fans as we expand the reach and visibility of Jolkona.

Essential Functions:

·     Generate a plan for community outreach and determine what information is needed to inform and acquire new donors.

·     Identify, research, and engage with advocates, blogger passion groups, and media influencers.

·     Increase the awareness of Jolkona and our nonprofit partners

·     Act as a liaison across the Internet; participating in minute-by-minute online conversations by answering questions, offering solutions and mediating conversations; and creating content for feeds and sparking discussion on various social networking sites.

·     Public relations – managing incoming media requests and building relationships with industry journalists; creating, executing and measuring media campaigns. 

·     Customer relations – providing customer support – answering questions however they come in (phone, e-mail, Twitter)

·     Engaging with users on Jolkona-managed channels (blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and third party channels (non-Jolkona-owned blogs, community forums, etc.)

·     Research industry standards and well-versed in community management trends and standards

Ideal Experience & Qualifications:

·     Outgoing personality

·     Loves sharing ideas with others

·     Strong writing and communication skills

·     Social media experience – knows how to use social media for personal and professional use (yes, they are different!)

·     Independent, creative self-starter

Would you like to jump head first into an online and print marketing campaign that allows you to creatively build a marketing plan from the ground up? Jolkona is seeking a marketing & design intern to help design print and online collateral for Jolkona’s brand, campaigns, and various events and activities. 

Essential Functions:

·     Work with Communications team to execute on Jolkona’s various design needs. 

·     Some examples of projects include: designing Jolkona twitter background, handouts, and

marketing materials.

·     Drive production and design of Jolkona Press/Media Kit

Ideal Experience & Qualifications:

·     Project management

·     Design skills – use of adobe illustrator, Photoshop, & Powerpoint

·     Marketing background- creative ideas to bring to the table to improve marketing Jolkona

Time Commitment: 

Must be able to attend all company wide meetings (usually one per month).

We are seeking an organized individual who likes to coordinate both in house and partner projects and really be the “go to” person for any need.

·     Help plan bi-weekly leadership team meeting agendas and keep minutes

·     Help maintain Jolkona calendar

·     Filing and administrative tasks as needed

·     Help coordinate emails to non-profit partners

·     Assist all teams throughout the office as needed

Ideal Experience & Qualifications:

·     Very organized

·     Self-motivated / Proactive

·     Can work in tight deadlines

·     Excellent writing and communication skills

Time Commitment: 

Must be available every other Monday evening for leadership board meetings and 3days/week for 4 hours each
