PAID INTERNSHIP! Washington State Legislative Internships !!!

Washington State Legislative Internships – Info Session

Location: Pavilion Living Room

Thursday, May 22, 2014

PAID Internship $1300 per month. From January to mid-March or April (depending on the year). Winter Quarter.

The Washington State Legislature is now accepting applications from sophomores and juniors for PAID internships. Internships available each legislative session (Winter and Spring). Students will be assigned to work in legislative offices in Olympia. This is a credit bearing internship and an excellent professional development and academic opportunity. Interns are paid

In addition to office work, interns participate in weekly academic seminars and workshops. The seminars include meeting with state officials, as well as panel discussions. In the workshops, interns take part in a budget exercise, mock hearing, and mock floor debate. They learn parliamentary procedure and how to write for the Legislature. Additionally, interns have the opportunity to shadow an elected official or administrator of a state agency and learn about his/her job internship.

The Washington State Legislative Internship Program is a great opportunity for students to learn the legislative process and gain professional work experience. Interns spend winter quarter or spring semester working in Olympia as staff for members of the Washington State House of Representatives or Senate while they earn credit through their schools.  Several interns per year are assigned to the Republican and Democrat caucus communication departments where they assist in the writing of floor speeches, op ed pieces, talking points, and newsletters.

The internship starts on the second Monday in January and runs for 60 days in even numbered years and 105 days in odd numbered years.  Students on the quarter system may be able to stay beyond winter quarter during the 105-day session.

The internship must be taken for credit. Credit amounts and academic requirements are determined by the school.
