Public Health Advocate with WashPIRG: Impact Internship

Right now, we’re working to end the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms. If you are like most Americans, you or someone in your family has been prescribed antibiotics to treat an illness. Maybe it was a simple ear infection, or strep throat. Or maybe it was something potentially life-threatening, like pneumonia or a post-surgery infection. When we get an infectious illness, we assume that the antibiotics our doctors prescribe for us will make us better. But what if they didn’t? Medical experts, including the World Health Organization, are warning that if we don’t stop the overuse of antibiotics, they could stop working — with potentially grave consequences for public health

That’s why we’re organizing campaigns across the country on this issue. Unlike most campaigns with Impact, the antibiotics campaign is targeting a corporation to initiate the change we want to see in our food system. Subway is the largest fastfood chain in the world and advertises itself as a healthy alternative to most fast food restaurants, so we are calling on them to stop serving meat raised with antibiotics by January 2016.

So: what do interns with Impact do? You’ll help us educate and engage more students and citizens on the overuse of antibiotics. You’ll help us get our issues into the media, build coalitions, organize events and lobby decision-makers. Ultimately, you’ll help us build the kind of public support it takes to make a difference. WashPIRG is looking to hire three interns this semester to work on our antibiotics campaign:

Media and Social Media: The media is the best way to get our message out to the public. Media interns will develop a media strategy for promoting our work to the public, educating the public about our issues, and using the media as a tactic in advocacy. Activities include keeping and maintaining press lists, developing relations with members of the local media, and maintaining visibility for events through letters to the editor, local public service announcements, doing radio feeds, digital organizing, postering, and other visibility. You will also help develop our online presence—creating and posting content on Facebook and Twitter, liking and interacting with other groups & VIPs in the state, and growing our reach to even more people online.

Grassroots: Grassroots interns are essentially responsible for building people power – our response to the political and financial power wielded by corporate interests and elected officials. You will coordinate our efforts to generate grassroots pressure aimed at targeted decision-makers. You will use tactics such as petition/letter drives, endorsement campaigns, district meetings, and generating local media attention.

Community Engagement and Research: Coalitions are an important part of the people power we will need to take on entrenched political and economic interests. Community Engagement interns will be directly responsible for reaching out to community leaders and health professionals to get them involved in our campaign as coalition partners. You will be in charge of developing and maintaining these relationships through the duration of the campaign. You will also be in charge of research responsibilities such as conducting surveys, writing reports or fact sheets on the overuse of antibiotics, and releasing reports to the media.

  • You’ll work side-by-side with one of our organizers, learning the ropes.
  • And you’ll attend briefings and trainings to learn even more about the issues and gain organizing skills

The Seattle Ladies Choir is looking for our first ever part-time media intern. This is an unpaid internship position with a maximum of 8 hours commitment per week. If you are a college student, academic credits may be available. (Posted 8/1/15)

Full Description:
The Seattle Ladies Choir is looking for an intern to help with expanding our media/press presence for our upcoming 10th Season. We need help with reaching out to various local advertising, media, press opportunities to promote our concerts and brand.

Requirements:
1. Time Commitment: 8 hours per week. Season 10 starts August 12, 2015 and runs through our concerts on January 15-16, 2016 and for 2 weeks following the concerts.
2. Knowledge of local press/media market and ability/willingness to create/expand the network of press/media contacts for the SLC.
3. Good communication and writing skills; strong organizational skills; broad working knowledge of various pertinent design/advertising software tools and social media marketing (ie, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, MailChimp, Facebook, etc).
4. Ability to work with the SLC leadership to understand the SLC brand and marketing needs.
5. Ability to work with the local press/media and represent SLC professionally.
6. Experience in and/or strong interest in working with choirs or performing arts non-profit groups; must have the ability to work within limited budget resources.

Bonus Skills/Abilities:
Graphic design and graphic arts skills; interest and capability to assist with creation of promotional posters/flyers/images.

The intern’s work will be tailored to focus on their personal interests in pr but may include: clip reporting, updating media lists to familiarize with local lifestyle media, event support, writing blog post entries and/or media alerts to refine their AP style, researching companies and media outlets, brainstorming social media strategies, and attend client meetings and photoshoots when appropriate.
